Legislative Updates

 
The N.C. General Assembly recently passed E-Verify legislation that will become effective as follows: 
 
  • Effective Oct. 1, 2012—employers with 500 or more employees will be required to use E-Verify to check work authorization for all new hires. 
  • Effective Jan. 1, 2013—employers with 100 or more employees will be required to use E-Verify to check work authorization for all new hires.
 
The Florida minimum wage will to increase by 12 cents to $7.79 per hour effective January 1, 2013. For tipped employees, the minimum wage will increase to $4.77 per hour on January 1, in addition to tips.

On June 14, 2011, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) introduced H.R. 2164, The Legal Workforce Act,
which would create a new employment verification system, the Employment Eligibility
Verification System (EEVS), mandating compliance for nationwide within 2 years.
