Even though the US Government delayed the Affordable Care Act employer mandate by one year, there is still an important deadline coming up within the next couple of weeks. The Notice of Exchange (NOE) requirement goes into effect on October 1, 2013. The NOE requirement applies to all employers subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act, and OSHA will be monitoring compliance. 

 

Paycards have been in the news a lot lately. The stories aren’t good: workers (many of whom already don’t make much in wages) are “forced” to pay substantial paycard fees to access their earnings. 

While the headlines grab attention and encourage click-throughs, the stories don’t always show the complete picture when it comes to the benefits paycards provide to both employers and their employees. 

In the staffing business, it may seem like you’re required to fill out dozens of forms with each new hire. It can be a lot to keep track of, and it can be a big headache if a form is incomplete or filled out incorrectly. 

One form that has been the source of confusion for some has been the I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. The US Federal Government requires the I-9 to be used to verify the identity and employment authorization of every individual you hire to work in the United States. This includes citizens and non-citizens.

The Florida minimum wage will to increase by 12 cents to $7.79 per hour effective January 1, 2013.

For tipped employees, the minimum wage will increase to $4.77 per hour on January 1, in addition to tips.

Washington state's minimum wage increases by 15 cents to $9.19 an hour starting on New Year's Day, the state Department of Labor & Industries announced Friday.

The state's minimum wage is adjusted each year for inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index over the preceding 12 months. This past year, it is up 1.67 percent. The yearly recalculation is required by Initiative 688, which Washington voters passed in 1998.

The N.C. General Assembly recently passed E-Verify legislation that will become effective as follows: 

Effective Oct. 1, 2012—employers with 500 or more employees will be required to use E-Verify to check work authorization for all new hires. 

Effective Jan. 1, 2013—employers with 100 or more employees will be required to use E-Verify to check work authorization for all new hires.
